/tp

Teleports a player to coordinates or to another player. /teleport is the long form.

The /tp command, also written /teleport, moves players and other entities instantly to coordinates or to another entity. It can also set which direction they face when they arrive. This page is a technical reference for /tp: every syntax form in Java and Bedrock, absolute, relative and local coordinates, rotation and facing, teleporting between dimensions, selectors and common errors. For a step-by-step beginner guide with examples like teleporting to a village, read how to teleport in Minecraft.

Syntax forms

Form Example What it does
/tp <destination> /tp Alex Teleports you to an entity
/tp <location> /tp 100 64 -200 Teleports you to coordinates
/tp <targets> <destination> /tp @a Alex Teleports targets to an entity
/tp <targets> <location> /tp @a 0 80 0 Teleports targets to coordinates
/tp <targets> <location> <yaw> <pitch> /tp @s 0 80 0 90 0 Also sets the direction faced
/tp <targets> <location> facing <position> /tp @s 0 80 0 facing 10 80 10 Arrive looking at a point
/tp <targets> <location> facing entity <entity> /tp @s ~ ~ ~ facing entity @p Arrive looking at an entity

Bedrock supports the same forms and adds an optional checkForBlocks true or false argument, which stops the teleport if the destination is inside solid blocks. /teleport and /tp are identical in both editions.

Coordinate types

Absolute coordinates

Plain numbers give an exact position: X, Y and Z. /tp 250 70 -1000 places you at that spot. Read your current coordinates with F3 in Java or the Show Coordinates setting in Bedrock; see how to see coordinates.

Relative coordinates (~)

The tilde means relative to the current position. /tp ~ ~10 ~ moves you 10 blocks straight up. /tp ~100 ~ ~ moves you 100 blocks east. You can mix them: /tp 0 ~ 0 keeps your height but moves you to X 0, Z 0.

Local coordinates (^)

The caret means relative to the direction you are facing: left, up and forward. /tp ^ ^ ^5 moves you 5 blocks forward in the direction you look, which is useful for command block dashes and blink abilities on maps. You cannot mix carets with plain numbers or tildes in the same position.

Rotation: yaw and pitch

After the coordinates, you can add two rotation values. Yaw is the horizontal direction: in Java, 0 faces south, 90 faces west, 180 faces north and -90 faces east. Pitch is the vertical angle: 0 is straight ahead, -90 is straight up and 90 is straight down. Relative rotation works too: /tp @s ~ ~ ~ ~180 ~ turns you around without moving. Map makers use rotation to make sure players face the right way when entering a room or starting a parkour course.

Teleporting between dimensions

/tp alone keeps you in your current dimension, unless you teleport to an entity in another dimension. To teleport to coordinates in the Nether or the End, use /execute in with the dimension:

  • /execute in minecraft:the_nether run tp @s 0 70 0
  • /execute in minecraft:the_end run tp @s 0 70 0
  • /execute in minecraft:overworld run tp @s 0 100 0

Bedrock uses the same idea with its own dimension names: overworld, nether and the_end. Remember that Nether coordinates are one eighth of the Overworld’s; see Nether portal coordinates.

Teleporting mobs and other entities

/tp works on any entity, not just players. /tp @e[type=cow,distance=..20] @s pulls every cow within 20 blocks to you. /tp @e[type=item] @s collects all dropped items. Be careful with @e on its own, which selects every entity in loaded chunks, including item frames, minecarts and armor stands, and can pull them all to one place.

Permissions

/tp needs cheats in single player, or operator permission level 2 or higher on Java servers. On Bedrock Realms, the owner can make players operators. Using commands in Bedrock disables achievements for that world. Many servers disable /tp for regular players and offer /tpa or /home commands from plugins instead, which are not part of vanilla Minecraft.

Common errors

  • Incorrect argument: mixing ^ with ~ or numbers in the same position.
  • No entity was found: the player name is wrong or the player is offline.
  • Only one entity is allowed: you used a selector like @a as the destination. Destinations must resolve to a single entity, such as @p or a name.
  • Teleported into a wall: the Y value is too low. Add a few blocks to Y or use relative height.
  • Fell into the void: you teleported over empty space in the End. Use a higher Y and check the location first.
  • Position out of world: coordinates beyond 30 million blocks or outside the height range are rejected.

Related commands

  • /locate: find structure coordinates to teleport to.
  • /setworldspawn: set the world spawn point.
  • /spawnpoint: set a player’s personal respawn point.
  • /spreadplayers: scatter players randomly across an area.

/tp FAQ

What is the difference between /tp and /teleport?

None. They are aliases.

How do you teleport up?

/tp ~ ~10 ~ moves you 10 blocks up.

How do you teleport to the Nether with a command?

/execute in minecraft:the_nether run tp @s x y z.

How do you teleport to a player?

/tp followed by the player name.

Practical /tp recipes

  • Back to spawn: /tp @s 0 100 0 takes you near the world center; use your actual spawn coordinates if they differ, or the /spawnpoint you set.
  • Escape a cave: /tp @s ~ 320 ~ followed by slow falling, or simply move up in steps of 20 blocks to avoid ending inside a mountain.
  • Gather your team: /tp @a @s brings every player to you before an event or boss fight.
  • Send a friend home: /tp Alex 120 64 -340 places them at their base.
  • Turn to face north: /tp @s ~ ~ ~ 180 0 in Java keeps your position but faces you north.
  • Look at a target: /tp @s ~ ~ ~ facing entity @e[type=ender_dragon,limit=1] points you at the dragon.
  • Dash forward: a command block running /tp @p ^ ^ ^3 pushes the nearest player three blocks in the direction they face.

Safe teleporting tips

Teleporting to unknown coordinates can drop you inside stone, over lava or above the void. Choose a Y value higher than the terrain, then fall or fly down in Creative or Spectator first if you are unsure. In Survival, teleporting high up and falling can kill you, so add Slow Falling or a water bucket. Write down useful coordinates so you can return later. When teleporting other players on a server, warn them first: unexpected teleports interrupt fights, building and redstone work.

/tp in command blocks

Command blocks running /tp power most adventure-map mechanics: checkpoints that return players to the last safe spot, portals between rooms, elevators and traps. Combine a pressure plate with an impulse command block for one-time teleports, or a repeating block with a selector like @a[x=10,y=64,z=10,distance=..1] to teleport anyone who steps on a spot. Local coordinates with a caret make doors that push players forward, and rotation values make sure every player faces the right way when they arrive.

/tp vs ender pearls and portals

In Survival without cheats, the closest things to /tp are ender pearls, which teleport you a short distance, Nether portals for long trips at one eighth the distance, and End gateways. /tp is instant and free, so most survival purists only use it to fix bugs, like getting stuck in a block after an update.

Both editions also let you teleport by clicking a player in Spectator mode, which is handy for staff on servers.
