Minecraft is one of the most popular games ever made, and it is played by everyone from young children to professional builders and speedrunners. If you have never played it, the blocky graphics can make it look simple, but there is a huge amount to do. This guide explains what Minecraft is, how the game works, which edition to choose, what the game modes are, whether it has an ending, and what parents should know.
Quick answer: what is Minecraft?
Minecraft is a sandbox video game developed by Mojang Studios, a studio owned by Microsoft. You play in a world made entirely of blocks: dirt, stone, wood, water, ores and hundreds more. You can break almost any block, collect it, and place it somewhere else. By combining materials you craft tools, weapons, armor, furniture and machines. There is no single goal you must follow. You decide whether to survive, explore, build, farm, fight or invent.
How Minecraft works
Every new world is generated randomly from a number called a seed, so no two worlds are alike unless they share a seed. Worlds are effectively endless, stretching about 30 million blocks in every direction from the center. The world is split into biomes such as plains, forests, deserts, oceans, jungles, mountains, swamps and caves, each with its own plants, animals and structures.
The basic loop is simple and satisfying:
- Gather: punch a tree to collect wood.
- Craft: turn wood into planks, a crafting table and your first tools.
- Survive: build a shelter before the first night, when hostile mobs such as zombies, skeletons, spiders and creepers come out.
- Progress: mine stone, then iron, then diamonds for better tools and armor.
- Explore: find villages, temples, shipwrecks, ancient cities and other structures full of loot.
A day and night cycle lasts 20 minutes of real time. See how long a Minecraft day is. For a step-by-step start, read how to play Minecraft: your first night.
Minecraft game modes
| Mode | What it is |
|---|---|
| Survival | The main mode. You gather everything yourself, have health and hunger, and can die. |
| Creative | Unlimited blocks, flying and no damage. Made for building. |
| Hardcore | Survival on the hardest difficulty with one life. If you die, the world is over. |
| Adventure | For custom maps. You cannot break or place most blocks freely. See what is Adventure mode. |
| Spectator | Fly through blocks and watch without interacting. Java Edition has it in full; Bedrock added it later. |
You can switch modes with the /gamemode command if cheats are on.
The three dimensions
- The Overworld: where you start, with biomes, oceans, caves and villages.
- The Nether: a fiery dimension reached through an obsidian portal. It has unique blocks, dangerous mobs, fortresses and bastions. See how to make a Nether portal.
- The End: a dark island in the void, home to the Ender Dragon and, after you beat it, end cities with elytra wings.
Does Minecraft have an ending?
Sort of. Defeating the Ender Dragon rolls the credits and shows the End Poem, which is the closest thing Minecraft has to an ending. But the world keeps going, and most players carry on building and exploring for years afterwards. Other big challenges include the Wither and the Warden. See how to beat Minecraft and how to beat the Ender Dragon.
Minecraft editions: Java vs Bedrock
There are two main versions of Minecraft today:
- Java Edition: the original version for Windows, macOS and Linux. It has the biggest modding community and thousands of community servers.
- Bedrock Edition: the version for Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iPhone, iPad and Android. It supports cross-play between all those devices, Realms, and the Marketplace for skins and worlds.
On PC you get both editions in one purchase. The two editions play almost the same but have small differences in redstone, combat and some mechanics, and Java players cannot join Bedrock servers without extra software. See is Minecraft cross platform and how much Minecraft costs on each platform. There is also Minecraft Education, a version built for schools.
Who makes Minecraft?
Minecraft was created by Swedish programmer Markus Persson, known as Notch. He released the first public version in May 2009, and the full release came on November 18, 2011. Jens Bergensten (Jeb) has led development since late 2011. In 2014, Microsoft bought Mojang for about 2.5 billion US dollars, and Mojang Studios still develops the game. See when Minecraft came out.
Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time, with more than 300 million copies sold. It is updated for free several times a year with game drops that add biomes, mobs and blocks. Since 2026, versions are numbered by year and drop, so Java Edition 26.1 was the first drop of 2026. See the latest Minecraft updates.
What can you do in Minecraft?
- Build: houses, castles, cities, pixel art and working computers made of redstone.
- Explore: caves, oceans, mountains and structures like woodland mansions and trial chambers.
- Farm: crops, animals, bees and automatic farms for almost every resource.
- Fight: mobs, raids, bosses and other players in PvP minigames.
- Engineer: redstone circuits, doors, elevators and sorting systems.
- Play with friends: on servers, Realms or split-screen. See how to play Minecraft with friends.
- Mod it: on Java, mods and shaders change almost everything. See how to install mods.
Is Minecraft good for kids? What parents should know
Minecraft is rated E10+ by the ESRB in North America and PEGI 7 in Europe. Violence is cartoonish and there is no blood. It is widely used in schools to teach maths, coding and teamwork. The main things for parents to manage are online play and spending:
- Online chat: multiplayer servers have text chat with strangers. On Bedrock, Xbox family settings control who your child can play and chat with.
- Purchases: Bedrock has a Marketplace with paid skins and worlds using Minecoins. Set spending limits in your console or app store settings.
- Screen time: Minecraft has no natural stopping point, so agreeing on time limits helps.
Playing in Creative mode or single-player Survival with no online features is a safe way for young children to start.
Minecraft beyond the game
Minecraft has grown into a whole brand. Spin-off games include Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends, there is a huge YouTube and streaming community, and A Minecraft Movie was released in cinemas in April 2025. See where to watch the Minecraft movie.
